Ghana, the second-largest exporter of cocoa in the world, is not only known for producing high-quality beans but also for its rising chocolate scene. In recent years, a handful of artisanal chocolate brands have emerged, highlighting Ghana’s rich cocoa heritage and creating some of the finest, authentic chocolates that are a must-try for any visitor. Brands like Bioko Treats, Fairafric, 57 Chocolate, Midunu Chocolates, Golden Tree, Maison Kwame, and others are paving the way for a new wave of local chocolate makers.
Ghana’s Cocoa History
Ghana’s history with cocoa dates back to the late 19th century, when Tetteh Quarshie, a local blacksmith, introduced the first cocoa seeds from Fernando Po (now Bioko, Equatorial Guinea). Since then, cocoa farming has become deeply embedded in Ghana’s economy and culture. Today, Ghana produces some of the world’s finest cocoa beans, and its chocolate industry is flourishing, both for export and local consumption.
The Chocolate Collection
Below you can find my favourite chocolate producers from Ghana:
Bioko Treats: A brand known for its high-quality, ethically sourced chocolate, Bioko emphasizes traditional methods and produces rich, velvety bars that embody the true flavor of Ghanaian cocoa.
Fairafric: Known for producing chocolate entirely in Ghana, Fairafric is a pioneer in creating “Made in Africa” chocolates that are both organic and sustainable. They are not only about the final product but also about empowering local communities.
57 Chocolate: Named after Ghana’s independence year, 57 Chocolate is run by two sisters who are dedicated to creating premium chocolate using only Ghanaian cocoa. Their brand highlights innovation while staying true to Ghana’s cultural roots.
Midunu Chocolates: Midunu offers a fusion of flavors, blending African ingredients like cardamom and hibiscus with high-quality chocolate. Their creations are as much about the experience of storytelling through flavor as they are about the chocolate itself.
Golden Tree: Perhaps the most recognizable of Ghana’s chocolate brands, Golden Tree has been a staple in the country for decades. Their iconic chocolate bars are widely available and beloved for their smooth texture and nostalgic value.
Maison Kwame, Bon Chocolat Ghana, Decokraft, Ohene Cacao: These emerging brands are transforming the local chocolate scene by combining traditional practices with modern flavors, proving that Ghanaian chocolate can hold its own on the world stage.
