Hike Dimond Head at sunrise should be definately on your bucket list when going to Hawaii.

My sister Caro and I recently did this hike and couldn’t have asked for a better way to start the day. Here’s a rundown of our experience and tips on how to plan your own trip.

Getting There

We took the bus since we already got our Halo public transportation card, it’s budget-friendly and easy to navigate. From our hotel in Waikiki, we caught Bus XX, which took us till the Farmers Market. From there it was a 15 minute walk up to the entrance.

You can also take the Trolley or get an Uber/Lyft to be dropped off directly at the entrance of Diamond Head State Monument.

Tickets and Costs

Make sure to buy your tickets before because reservations are required and the time slots are limited and often sold out days ahead. We bought our tickets from their official website.

The entrance fee for walk-ins was only $5 per person, while those arriving by car pay and extra fee of $10 per vehicle. Hawaii Residents  and Children 3 and under enter for free.

Make sure to check the opening hours since the gates open at 6:00 AM, perfect timing to catch the sunrise from the top.

The Hike

The hike itself took us about 35 minutes to reach the summit. It’s moderately challenging with some steep sections, but the panoramic views at the top are absolutely worth it. Watching the sun rise over the Pacific Ocean was breathtaking, and the golden light hitting Honolulu and the surrounding islands was like something out of a postcard.

Farmers Market Nearby

After the hike you can discover the nearby Kapiʻolani Community College Farmers Market. Located just a short walk from the Diamond Head entrance, it’s the perfect spot to refuel with fresh local products, baked goods, and Hawaiian specialties.

The market is open every Saturday from 7:30 AM to 11:00 AM, so if you time your hike right, you can pass by for a taste of Hawaii’s best.
