hana can get HOT! 🔥 And after roaming through markets, vibing at festivals, or dancing at a local party, you’re gonna need more than just water to cool down. So what do the locals do? They sip their way through the heat — and honestly, I did the same.
If you’re heading to Ghana, here are the must-try traditional drinks that kept me refreshed, hydrated, and feelin’ like a true local:
Sobolo – Ghana’s Hibiscus Magic🌺
This one’s a whole vibe. Deep red, slightly tangy, spicy from ginger and cloves… sobolo is that drink that slaps on a hot afternoon. I got mine in reused glass bottles from a street vendor in Accra — iconic. Wanna go full Ghanaian? Pair it with some khebab!
Coconut Water – Straight From the Tree🥥
No lie, cracking open a fresh coconut on the roadside? Top-tier experience. The taste is light, slightly sweet, and super hydrating. Plus, once you’re done drinking, they’ll slice it open so you can scoop out the jelly. Yes please! 😍
Pito – For the Culture🍯
Okay, this one’s lowkey fermented so it’s got a kick. It’s a traditional millet beer, mostly homemade in the north of Ghana. It’s earthy, a little sour, and usually shared from a big calabash bowl. Would you try it?

Asaana – The Sweet Corn Drink
Made from caramelized fermented corn and sugar, asaana is super sweet and usually comes in a little plastic baggie (you bite the corner to sip). It’s very much a childhood classic in Ghana — and lowkey addictive. Warning: don’t drink it too fast, lol.
Brukina – Like a Drinkable Dessert
Brukina is creamy, made from millet and milk, and comes chilled. Honestly? It’s more like a snack in a bottle. Cold, filling, and soooo satisfying. You’ll find it in little corner shops or women selling it from coolers. Support them, always 💛
