If you’re craving a mix of adventure, wildlife, and a connection to Ghana’s natural beauty, Shai Hills Resource Reserve is the place to be! I had the opportunity to trek through this stunning reserve already two times, and let me tell you—it’s an experience that goes beyond just sightseeing. It’s a chance to feel fully immersed in nature while learning about the rich culture and history of the Shai people.

Why Shai Hills? Shai Hills is a quick trip from Accra, making it perfect for a day trip if you’re based in the capital. It’s a protected area that offers a blend of grassy plains, rock formations, and caves. If you’re a fan of wildlife (like me), you’ll be excited to spot baboons, antelopes, zebras, and more! The best part is that it’s not overly commercialized, so it still feels like a hidden gem.

My Trekking Experience I recommend starting your trek early in the morning to avoid the heat. As an adventurer at heart, I was pumped to tackle the different terrains—rocks, grasslands, and caves! Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable, sharing stories about the history of the Shai people and the significance of the land we were walking on.

We trekked up to the famous Mogo Hills, where the view is breath taking. Standing there, looking out over the reserve, you really feel at one with nature. For someone who loves a good mix of challenge and beauty, this hike had it all. Plus, there’s something about knowing you’re walking in the footsteps of ancient communities that makes the experience even more special.

Meeting the Baboons One of the highlights of my visit was seeing the baboons. They’re not shy! The reserve is home to a troop of baboons that you’ll likely spot along the way. I kept my distance (they’re wild animals after all), but it was fascinating to watch them interact in their natural habitat.

The Caves If you love a good adventure, the caves are an absolute must! We explored one of the largest, the Obonu Tem Cave, which was once used by the Shai people. The climb up can be tricky, but it’s worth it. The inside of the cave is cool and eerie in the best way possible—definitely a highlight for those who love history mixed with a little adrenaline.

Insider Tips:

Guide Is a Must: Don’t try to trek without a guide. They know the paths, the best spots for wildlife viewing, and can even help you find hidden caves that you might miss otherwise.

Bring Snacks & Water: You’re out in the wild, and it can get HOT, especially if you’re trekking for a few hours. I packed light snacks and a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated.

Wear Good Shoes: Don’t underestimate this trek! It can be rocky, and you’ll be climbing at some points, so proper hiking shoes are essential.

Timing Is Key: Go early in the morning for the best wildlife sightings. The animals tend to be more active before the heat of the day kicks in.
