M anoa Falls should be definately on your bucket list when going to Hawaii.
During our time in Honolulu, Caro and I decided to escape the city to experience the beauty of Manoa Falls. This hike, tucked away in a tropical rainforest just a short drive from Waikiki, was an unforgettable experience filled with natural beauty, tranquility, and a breathtaking waterfall as the grand finale.
We caught Bus 5 from Waikiki, which took us close to the entrance of the trailhead. The bus ride was about 30 minutes and only cost $3 each, making it a super affordable way to get there. From the bus stop, it’s a short walk to the start of the trail. If you’re driving, there’s parking available at the entrance for a fee.
The Manoa Falls Trail is relatively easy, about 1.6 miles round trip. It took us about an hour and a half to complete, including plenty of stops to soak in the surroundings. The trail winds through a stunning, dense jungle full of vibrant green foliage, bamboo groves, and the sounds of rushing water.
The path can be muddy—especially after it rains—so we recommend wearing sturdy shoes or hiking sandals. Despite the mud, the trail wasn’t too difficult, and we saw hikers of all ages making the trek.
At the end of the trail you will find the stunning Manoa Falls, a 150-foot waterfall cascading down a sheer rock face into a serene pool below. The sight of the waterfall was a reward in itself, and we spent some time just sitting and taking in the peaceful atmosphere. Swimming in the pool isn’t allowed due to safety concerns, but standing nearby and feeling the cool mist from the falls was refreshing enough.
“Rise with the light of the sun, and witness the beauty of the world at Manoa.”
Do not swim in the Falls: Swimming is prohibited because of the risk of a bacterial infection that can be found in freshwater sources.
Pack drinks: Stay hydrated and take your drink with you.
Comfortable Shoes: You’ll be walking quite a bit, so wear comfy shoes.
Entry: No fee but parking is aprox. 7 USD.
Guided Tour: If you like your comfort opt for a guided tour including transportation and drinks for about 50 USD.
Transport: Uber/Lyft ride from Waikiki aproximately cost about $40 USD, Bus day ticket is 7,50 USD.
