O

ne of the best parts about traveling is discovering little treasures along the way – things that remind you of the culture, the people, the flavors, and the vibes. Ghana is one of those places where I just can’t leave without stuffing my suitcase full of goodies. If you’re looking for authentic, affordable, and meaningful souvenirs to bring home, here are some of my absolute faves you shouldn’t miss:

Plantain Chips – The Street Snack I Can’t Resist

Let’s start with my #1 addiction – plantain chips! Whether you’re stuck in traffic or just walking through the streets of Accra, chances are someone will pass by your car window selling these golden snacks. They come in sweet or salty versions depending on how ripe the plantains are when fried. And trust me – once you start munching, it’s hard to stop!

You can also find more “bougie” versions in the supermarket, and my top pick is the Sankofa brand. Not only are they crunchy and delicious, but each pack also comes with a beautiful African proverb tucked inside – such a cool surprise! It makes the perfect gift for friends and family back home.

Local Tea Herbs – Sip & Soothe Your Soul

Another fave of mine? Fresh herbal teas. Whether it’s dried hibiscus (known locally as “sobolo”) or moringa leaves, you’ll find them at almost every local market. I love how natural and pure they are – no additives, just the goodness of nature. They’re not only refreshing but also packed with health benefits.

Shea Butter & Chichinga Powder – Beauty & Spice from the Market

No trip to Ghana is complete without grabbing some natural shea butter – it’s literally skincare gold. Smooth, rich, and deeply moisturizing. I always stock up.

And for the foodies in my life, I bring back Chichinga powder – a local spice mix that’s used to season meat skewers (also called suya in other parts of West Africa). My friends can’t get enough and use it for their BBQs back in Europe – it’s smoky, spicy, and full of flavor!

Recycled Glass Beads – Wearable Stories

I’ve always had a soft spot for Ghanaian handicrafts, and one thing I especially love are the recycled glass beads. They have such a unique look, and each bead carries a piece of history and culture. I even started creating some of my own bracelets from them – you can check them out in my Etsy shop if you’re curious! It’s sustainable, stylish, and supports local artisans – win-win.

African Fabrics – A Splash of Color & Culture

Ghanaian fabrics are next-level beautiful. I’m especially into the bold prints from Woodin, which you can find in many shops across the country. If you have time, go to a local Schneider (tailor) and get a custom-made outfit – whether it’s a dress, shirt or pants, the fit and flair are unmatched.

For something extra special, consider buying a piece of traditional Kente fabric. It’s woven by hand, super intricate, and was once reserved for royalty. It’s more expensive, but it’s also a piece of living history.

“The best souvenirs aren’t things — they’re stories you can hold, wear, taste, or share.”

Sweet Treats – Mango Balls & Chocolate with a Twist

My go-to snack when I’m in Ghana? Dried mango fruit balls coated in chocolate – especially from the ethical brand Fairafric. Their chocolate bars are also chef’s kiss – they come in flavors like tigernut or moringa, and make super unique gifts.

Bolgatanga Baskets – Colorful & Handwoven

If I have space left in my luggage, I always try to take home a Bolgatanga basket. Handwoven in the north of Ghana, they’re not only stunning and vibrant but also super practical – perfect for shopping, storage or even as home decor.
